Broncos Get Their Head Coach Hire Correct, Finally

Denver Broncos Nathaniel Hackett Hire
Nathaniel Hackett has been hired to be the next head coach of the Denver Broncos. Many of the fans believe that this was the correct choice, he checked all the boxes. His past players spoke up about how great he was on social media, he had strong leadership qualities, he is young (42 years old), he is relatable, he is energic, he had career success going to an AFC Championship with Blake Bortles and the Jaguars. I would argue his most appealing quality to fans, is that he is the young offensive mind that every other team seems to be having success with, that the Broncos front office continued to pass on.
Denver went back-to-back defensive coaches with Vance Joseph and Vic Fangio because the strength of our rosters was on the defensive side of the ball. This all sounds well and good, but winning football games should be first and foremost, and the Broncos haven’t had an above .500 season in six full years. History showed that both coaches lacked something outside of defensive expertise, they lacked the ability to be head coaches. They lacked the fortitude during high stakes, pressure cooker, clutch moments that required them to make the difficult calls when they mattered most. I could spend the rest of this article identifying past coaches’ weaknesses and negative moments, but the reality is the Broncos finally got it right in my opinion.
Nathaniel Hackett spent the last few seasons in Green Bay, earning Aaron Rodgers [likely] two MVPs, building the most efficient red zone offense ever, and one of the league’s lowest turnover squads ever. During his tenure we saw the rise to prominence a monster running game with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. We saw one of the league’s highest scoring offenses. We saw the #1 overall seed in the NFC. Hackett, in Green Bay, had all the success he possibly could with a Hall of Fame quarterback and all the tools they surrounded him with. The fact that he had Aaron Rodgers doesn’t bring his value down in my mind, the fact that he maximized Aaron Rodgers skillset to lead the team to success is an testament to his skill.
Nathaniel Hackett can hopefully be the guy that gets this team moving back in the right direction and reestablishes a culture of winning is all that matters. Thinking in retrospect, the Broncos passed on Kliff Kingsbury, Matt LeFluer, and Kyle Shanahan during the last coaching hunts, but this time they were the first team to make a head coach hire and went out and got the guy they wanted. Hackett will come into Denver, he will be supported by the team, he will represent George Paton’s first major leadership hire as the General Manager of the Denver Broncos, and he will be the first major building block of returning the Broncos to the playoffs.
Broncos Next Ownership Situation
All reports were that the Denver Broncos would hire a head coach then move on to the ownership situation, after 10 interviews and only bringing Hackett back in for a second round, they accomplished step one. After the head coach was hired, the Broncos should be well on their way to opening the bidding and being under new ownership soon.
Major bidding groups include a group headed by Peyton Manning, a group headed by John Elway, reports of a group headed by Amazon billionaire Jeffrey Bezos, a group headed by Colorado’s Own billionaire Robert Smith, Another Colorado billionaire Phillip Anschutz, and finally there was chatter of a Jay-Z bidding group. Whoever takes over, their stability and leadership will be a step in the right direction as the Bronco’s storied ownership drama has been a serious problem over the last few years since the passing of Mr. Bowlen.
George Paton handled the head coaching vacancy with efficiency and decisiveness. The Broncos current ownership trust will handle the sale of the team for an estimated $3.75-4.2 billion dollars in the coming weeks. While the ownership situation is being worked out, Hackett should be getting straight to work on who will be his coaching assistants and build his cabinet from a solid pool of candidates.
I’m very curious to see who he brings with him. Personally, I’d like to see Jerod Mayo or Ed Donatell at Defensive Coordinator, and I wonder if he brings any Green Bay assistant coaches with him to Denver. Denver today still has some great coaches with the team in Mike Munchak, Zach Azzanni, and Bill Kolar coaching offensive line, wide receivers, and Defensive lines respectively.
Denver Broncos Aaron Rodgers?
The question on everyone’s minds though is, does the Nathaniel Hackett hiring give the Broncos the inside track to land Aaron Rodgers, Devante Adams, and David Bakhtiari? What would a potential trade package look like from the Denver Broncos? If Aaron Rodgers tells the Packers he’s retiring or they must trade him, how much leverage do the Packers have to get a huge trade package in return? All these questions should be answered in the coming months and will make for a spicy Denver Sports News scene in the coming future!
